What is Favipiravir?

Favipiravir is a an antiviral drug cleared by the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) on last week for “emergency restricted” use among Covid-19 patients.

Glenmark will sell the generic Favipiravir under the brand name FabiFlu.

The original Favipiravir came from a Japanese drug later purchased by the Japanese company Fujifilm. It has been approved in Japan in 2014 for fighting the emergency case of a flu epidemics.

According to what Glenmark declared, Favipiravir works only during the earlier stages of the disease, when the viral replication is higher, but the body’s immune response has not gone into overdrive. 

What is Remdesivir?

Remdesivir is an antiviral drug of the nucleotide analog class, developed by Gilead Sciences for Ebola virus disease.

On 25th June 2020 EMA (The European Medicines Agency) confirmed it as the first drug against coronavirus in adults and adolescents from 12 years of age with respiratory support pneumonia. It is the first drug against Covid19, according to the Ema website, to receive this approval, which must now have the final go-ahead from the EU Commission.

What’s the difference between Faviparir and Remdesivir?

The only difference is that Favipiravir works for mild to moderate Covid-19 patients, whereas Remdesivir works for severe patients
